Walk-On’s opening Furlough Kitchen food truck to serve hospitality workers free meals

One local restaurant offers a helping hand to hospitality workers hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis.

Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux announced it will open Furlough Kitchen by Walk-On’s, a non-profit operation formed during the COVID-19 crisis which decimated employment in the hospitality industry.

The Furlough Kitchen food truck aims to provide furloughed hospitality workers one free meal, no matter their former employer, on select days.

Walk-On’s, where Saints quarterback Drew Brees is a co-owner and partner, says recently it introduced this concept in Baton Rouge and now plans to expand to additional communities, including the New Orleans area.

The food truck will stop by the Walk-On’s location at Clearview Mall, 4436 Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Metairie, to serve one free meal to furloughed hospitality workers.

Walk-On’s says it anticipates serving more than 1,000 meals at the location per day on Tuesday, April 7 and Thursday, April 9 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

According to the Walk-On’s Facebook page, the Furlough Kitchen food truck will also make a stop at the Walk-On’s in Houma, at 1795 Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard, on Thursday, April 9. The food truck will serve meals there from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“As is the case across the country, community and team needs are changing rapidly and our involvement has never been more vital,” said Walk-On’s franchisee Kyle Brechtel. “After Furlough Kitchen by Walk-On’s kicked off last week in Baton Rouge, we knew we had to bring a similar concept to the New Orleans area with 100% of all donations going towards feeding furloughed employees. With help from donors, we have the ability to lessen the impact that COVID-19 has caused, one meal at a time. We are all in this together.”

The new initiative is a community involvement project through Walk-On’s Game On Foundation, which shifted focus toward providing meals for employees whose jobs have been affected due to the cornovirus pandemic.
