Zipping around the track and fighting to the finish are the Red Stick Roller Derby ladies. These rocking and rolling gals finish their 2019 season with the Home Teams Championship, Oct. 12.
At Saturday’s championship face-off, the Southdowns Squad takes on the defending champs Mid City Mafia. This is the first time Southdowns Squad goes for the trophy against Mid City Mafia.
There will also be an exhibition mini-bout with Red Stick Roller Derby Juniors. Finally, expect another full-length second bout featuring the Spanish Town Flamingos and the Acadiana Roller Derby.
It’s an active day filled with hometown rivalries. It all kicks off when doors open at 5:00 pm. Here are the scheduled matches for the day:
5:15 pm – Red Stick Roller Derby Juniors exhibition game
6:15 pm – Championship bout, Southdowns Squad vs Mid City Mafia
8:00 pm – Spanish Town Flamingos vs Acadiana
Visitors of all ages are welcome to enter. Hazenberg, head announcer at Red Stick Roller Derby events, thinks this event is for everyone.
“Roller derby empowers and inspires women and girls of all ages, races, orientations and body types,” said Hazenberg. “Derby is a fast-paced, hard-hitting sport full of speed and skill, big hits and spills. We keep our shows family-friendly; you won’t hear our announcers cussing, for example. It’s good, clean fun for everyone!”
General admission tickets start at $15. Those with a student, military or first responder ID may get in for $12. Kids aged 5 to 12 may get in for $8 per ticket. And, kids aged 4 and under get in for free. Cash or card accepted.
