Tigers, Bears…and Santa? Check Out BREC’s Zoo Lights

It's an annual Christmas event in Baton Rouge

BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo invites the community to celebrate the holidays with two great events – ZooLights and Art Gone Wild. ZooLights is a festive evening mile-long trail through the Zoo featuring more than 50 illuminated display sculptures of animals and traditional holiday spectacles. The holiday tradition begins November 23 and continues through December 30. Closed Christmas Eve & Christmas Day. Admission gates open 5:30pm-8pm, grounds close at 9pm.

This year, the Zoo is partnering with The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank to bring more impact & excitement to Zoolights. Every guest presenting non-perishable food items (minimum of one
per person) during the hours of Zoolights, will receive a 50% discount from the regular admission price. Regular admission prices are: $5 for adults/teens; $4 for senior citizens; $3 for children (2-12 years old) and $3 for Friends of the Zoo members. These amounts will be cut in half when a non-perishable food item is presented at the time of entry & all food donations will go directly to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

During each evening, the Safari Post Gift Shop and Flamingo Café will remain open & feature special holiday treats and gift options.

Visitors can enjoy other special holiday activities on the following dates:

  • 11/23 Coca Cola Santa
  • 11/24 Ornament Crafting
  • 11/27 Giving Tuesday Food Bank/Zoo Media Event
  • 11/30 & 12/1 Safari Santa

The Zoo will also present the annual Art Gone Wild contest during ZooLights. Artists of all ages and experience levels are invited to paint or draw the Zoo animals that inspire them most and
submit their work for judging at the Zoo’s annual ZooLights event.

Entries for Art Gone Wild are free, but submissions are limited to one per person. Artwork entered must be 2-D and drawn or painted entirely by hand. Submission categories are as
follows:

  • Alligator (Child up to 2nd Grade)
  • Eagle (Child Grades 3rd – 6th)
  • Giraffe (Child Grades 7th – 12th)
  • Tiger (All Adults)

Submissions will be on display 12/7 & 12/8 during ZooLights for visitors to vote for their favorites in person. A first, second and third place winner will be determined within each category by public vote, and an overall winner will be determined by a panel of community judges.

The deadline for art submissions is November 23 and submissions can be dropped off at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo or the BREC main office on Florida Boulevard.
