In Partnership with the Southern Weekend

BIGFISH: Redfish are resilient despite high Mississippi River levels inshore

Redfish can tolerate low salinity and have continued to stay in our marshes and feed aggressively.

Well, high Mississippi River levels are causing problems for residents’ livestock, emergency workers, and even anglers but there is good news.

While speckled trout fishing has been a bit of a challenge, boy the redfishing has been on fire!

Delacroix = Redfish

And there is no place to catch redfish like Delacroix, Louisiana.

Captain Jack Payne and sporting goods owner Tony Puglia and I headed out of Sweetwater Marina and it became a day and one stop is all it took.

Captain Jack says with this heat, live shrimp is important.

“What I always find is it gets hotter and the fish get a little more finicky that swimming in the water is just like a reaction they just got to have it sometimes the fresh shrimp I mean they work, don’t get me wrong but a lot of shrimp in front of a redfish doing like this they are definitely eating it every time. 100 percent.”

Free Fishing Weekend & Parish Cup Redfish

Now if mother nature allows us to get on the water this weekend there are two big events worth noting.

First, this is the state’s free fish weekend; no fishing license needed and if you have a friend who doesn’t fish then this is a great chance to show them what they are missing.
