Here's some fun facts you might not have known!

Over the years, Chick-fil-A has transformed into one of the most beloved fast food chains in America. But you may not be familiar with the history of the chicken sandwich giant. Here’s 6 fun facts you might not have known about Chick-fil-A!

1) They actually invented the chicken sandwich.

Back in 1961, Atlanta restaurant owner Truett Cathy began to experiment with recipes for his alternative to the beloved hamburger. And after three years and hundreds of recipes later, the chicken sandwich was officially born. It’s still served the same way today, with two pickles on a toasted butter bun, and the secret recipe is locked away in a vault at the Chick-fil-A headquarters.

2) The name is more than just a clever play on words.

Ever wondered what the “A” in Chick-fil-A means? Well after inventing the chicken sandwich, Cathy was tasked to come up with a name for his new creation. He compared the chicken breasts used to the best cut of beef available – a beef fillet – making his new sandwich a chicken fillet. After some time, chicken was shortened to “chick” and the “A” was capitalized to signify that the restaurant serves only the best quality food to its customers.

3) The first locations were in shopping malls.

Chick-fil-A now has over 2000 locations around the world, but did you know they actually got their start in mall food courts? The first in-mall restaurant opened in Atlanta in 1967, and the company didn’t make the shift to standalone locations until 1994. The move has payed off in a big way as Chick-fil-A is one of only five restaurant chains in America with sales over $10 billion in 2019.

4) Did you know the cow mascots have names?

The iconic cows of the “Eat more chikin” campaign first appeared on billboards around the Atlanta area in 1995. Fast forward some 20 years later and the cows have become some of the most memorable mascots in all of advertising. And in 2015, Chick-fil-A introduced us to Cowboy Phil and his four cows – Freedom, Freckles, Kat and Molly, who’ve starred in numerous commercials and print ads for the company.

5) Every time a new location opens, the first 100 people eat free for a year.

The fast food chain has gained somewhat of a rabid fan-base over the years with hardcore fans actually camping outside the restaurant to be part of that first 100. For their dedication, they’re given a card that gifts them one Chick-fil-A sandwich meal a week for the full 52 weeks. The giveaway has become so popular, one Chick-fil-A super-fan is said to have camped out over 110 times and traveled more than 2900 miles for a single opening.
