BATON ROUGE, La. (THE LOUISIANA WEEKEND) - July 14th is National Mac and Cheese Day. It is a day to indulge in one of America’s most beloved comfort foods. Do you know the origin of mac and cheese in the United States? James Hemings was enslaved by President Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson sent Hemings to France in 1784 to learn the “art of cookery”. By 1787 James Hemings became Jefferson’s chef de cuisine in France.
Hemings brought the recipe for “macaroni pie” to the United States. The recipe includes noodles boiled in a mix of half milk, half water and a mixture of cheddar and parmesan cheeses.
The best way to celebrate mac and cheese day is to make your favorite mac and cheese recipe or visit your favorite restaurant to indulge in one of America’s favorite comfort foods.
We visited The Big Cheezy food truck to see how they put a Louisiana spin on mac and cheese with their crawfish mac and cheese. They also prepared their most popular dish, which is a grilled cheese filled with bacon and their four cheese mac and cheese. The Big Cheezy is open Thursday through Sunday from 7:30pm until 12:00am
