Local Activities For Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Of Service

BATON ROUGE, La. (THE LOUISIANA WEEKEND) - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 16, 2023.  There are so many ways to commemorate the holiday with a day of service.  As the King family says, this is a day on, not a day off.  Here are some service projects taking place this weekend and Monday.

Southern University is hosting “Sustain the Yard” volunteer event on Saturday, January 14, 2023 from 8:00am until 12:00pm at the Honors College.

Glen Oaks Magnet High School is hosting Karaoke and Movie on the lawn on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 5:00pm.  They will play three videos.  The first video is a history of the Glen Oaks Magnet High School’s marching band.  The second video shows the life of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  The third video is the blockbuster movie JUMANJI, Welcome To The Jungle.  This is family friendly event that is free and open to the public.  The event is also a fundraiser, as the marching band is accepting donations to purchase new uniforms.

Louisiana State University is hosting a Day of Service on Monday, January 16, 2023 from 7:30am – 2:00pm at various Baton Rouge locations.  Grab and go lunch is included for all volunteers.  This event is open to students, staff, and the community.  For more information and to volunteer, visit HERE

The MLK Unity Celebration is a time-honored tradition joining Louisiana State University, Southern University, and Baton Rouge Community College for a celebration of to commemorate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  This year’s celebration is hosted by Southern University on Thursday, January 19, 2023 at 6:00pm at the Smith-Brown Memorial Union Ballroom. The guest speaker is  State Representative Patrick O. Jefferson.  At this event, three students will be awarded for their service efforts in the community.
