Hold onto your plethora of candy and bowl full of popcorn because we have a list of the United States’ most popular spooky cinema. Can you guess Louisiana’s favorite Halloween movie?
Why people love to sit down and watch horror flicks through the slats of their fingers is beyond me. But, data journalist group Comparitech researched to find the most popular scary movie per state.
According to Comparitech’s study, Interview with a Vampire (1994) is the most popular Halloween movie in Louisiana.
The boot state possibly claims this as the best movie for spooky season because of the movie’s roots. Interview with a Vampire was based on New Orleans-native Anne Rice’s 1976 novel of the same title. So, Louisianians may like to support their hometown art. Even parts of the movie were set and filmed in south Louisiana, including New Orleans.

Other states seem to support hometown art, too. Texas, Colorado and Rhode Island also picked scary movies that hit close to home.
Comparitech’s article notes that horror films based on true stories add to the popularity and fright factor for those living in the state in which they’re set.

This study comes from a combination of IMDB and GoogleTrends data.
The researchers used IMDB’s list of top horror movies and searched each film individually on Google Trends. This allowed them to find which state scored the highest. Then, they the designated film for that state. If any state came up twice, the researchers used the film that ranked higher on IMDB for popularity. If a state didn’t appear top for any of the movies, they looked at the state’s individual information. They looked for the topic “horror movies” to ascertain which movie was increasingly searched for in the related topics section. Finally, they omitted any film with comedy as a genre (such as Shaun of the Dead).
So, what is your scary movie of choice? Mine is Silence of the Lambs. The Shining and Insidious are close seconds, though.
