Pretty much every evening in the Louisiana summer is a hot night. But, in Downtown Hammond, one night in August is particularly special. The Hammond Downtown Development District (DDD) hosts its 24th annual Hot August Night Friday, August 23, 2019.
Hot August Night is a community event that welcomes an estimated 10,000 visitors to Downtown Hammond for one night of fun in many forms! The music starts jamming and the drinks start pouring at 5:00 pm. The organized event wraps up around 9:30 pm, but the nightlife parties on.
With about 50 places to shop, eat and play, the night is usually a success for local businesses and community socializing. All of downtown fills with local entertainment, like art exhibits, wine tastings, kids activities, live music and retail sales.
“We love this part of the event! It allows our visitors to explore Downtown and visit with some of our Merchants, and they’re a huge part of what makes Downtown so special!,” says Chelsea Tallo, Executive Director of the Hammond DDD.

DDD presents two live music areas this year. Grammy winning Zydeco artist, Wayne Toups, headlines at the main stage. Toups performs from 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm. Also, back by popular demand, the Listening Local stage will be set up to showcase local artists and original songs. Don’t expect any cover songs here!
“This community has been striving to give a voice to local musicians and we’re excited to continue to do our part.,” says Tallo.
Before the music begins, Southeastern Louisiana University kicks off the night. LionPAWlooza, an athletics pep rally, performs to bring even more spirit to Downtown.
Of course, the 24th annual Hot August Night will feature an entertaining favorite like the Wine & Beer Walk. Thirsty patrons (21 years or older) can participate in the Wine & Beer Walk by paying for a punch card at the beginning of the night. Then, participants walk around town finding various booths to sip on selected wines and craft beers. Also, patrons who get their punch card marked by 20 merchants can turn in their card at the end of the night to win a gift basket.
