Robbie and Joseph volunteered to serve on the Louisiana Chapter Board of Directors in 2008 and founded the 501c3 Shreveport Diabetes Sports, Inc. in 2010. Robbie’s son, Robert was diagnosed at the age of nine and Robbie and Joseph have been a passionate supporters of JDRF since his diagnosis. Together, they have hosted annual golf and tennis tournaments in the Shreveport area and have raised nearly $500,000 to date for the Louisiana Chapter of JDRF.

“Joseph and I are so honored and humbled to receive this year’s Honoree Award. Our passion is driven from my son and other children affected by T1D and our goal is to raise money to find a cure. We believe that JDRF will be the organization to do that in our lifetime,” said Robbie Gaiennie.

Ms. Robbie Gaiennie and Mr. Joe Sterkx will be presented the award at the gala on March 9, 2018.

About Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas loses the ability to produce insulin—a hormone essential to turning food into energy. T1D strikes both children and adults suddenly and is unrelated to diet or lifestyle. It requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin. With T1D there are no days off, and there is no cure.

About JDRF

JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications. To accomplish this, JDRF has invested nearly $2 billion since our inception. We are an organization built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities; collaborating regionally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact; and uniting on a national stage to pool resources, passion, and energy. We collaborate with academic institutions, policymakers, and corporate and industry partners to develop and deliver a pipeline of innovative therapies to people living with T1D. Our staff and volunteers in the JDRF Louisiana Chapter and in more than 100 locations throughout the United States and our six international affiliates are dedicated to advocacy, community engagement and our vision of a world without T1D.
