Central Louisiana State Hospital Memorial
At the Central Louisiana State Hospital Memorial in Pineville, many of those who were treated for mental illness and have died at the hospital are now buried in unmarked graves. Throughout the early 20th century, the hospital often treated its patients harshly, as some were locked in chairs, confined to holding pens or forced to sleep in crowded dorm. Today, despite having remains of nearly 2,000 people, only a select few people have named markers. A cemetery preservation group is working to raise enough money to honor the late patients by erecting a series of monuments.
