In Partnership with the Southern Weekend

BIGFISH: Cold Weather = Hot Fishing

The beginning of the week was nothing but wet, cold, and windy. But this weekend’s forecast is looking near perfect for fishing.

The beginning of the week was nothing but wet, cold, and windy. But this weekend’s forecast is looking near perfect for fishing.

Perfect Conditions For Fishing

Last week, we talked about the water temperature being above normal and needing to drop about 10 degrees. Well, the cold weather has helped us with that.

When you add the warmer temperatures this weekend, light winds, and good tide ranges, it’s near perfect conditions.

Fishing Hotspots In Cold Weather

Captain Mike Gallo in Slidell says this weekend offers some great options from Lake Pontchartrain to the Gulf Outlet Canal.

“With good weather, certainly in Lake Pontchartrain, you can’t pass up those over-average size trout. If you do have marginal weather down by the wall in Chalmette there is a vast variety of different circumstances you can fish. From marsh fishing to shallow water, all the way down to 40 ft of water,” Captain Mike Gallo said.

In Dularge, the weather hasn’t slowed down Captain Lloyd Landry. He says the key is fishing draining canals from the marsh.

And in Lafitte, Captain Lane Zimmer says redfish are easy even on windy days and the trout are moving in thick.

Be Sure To Use These Baits

The best baits to consider, certainly live shrimp, but when it comes to plastics, we use a slow retrieve and a bait with a good action.

“So your (Berkley) GULP curtail, any of the variety of the different curtails. I like silver, I like white, I like salt and pepper colors, those are colors I think of in the fall of the year when the water temperature gets to what we’re looking at,” Captain Mike Gallo said.
