Deep water channels near shallow flats and grass beds are your best bet for Speckled Trout and Redfish this time of year.
Despite the weather, there is great speckled trout and redfish action awaiting anglers.
Don’t Fear The Cold Waters
The ride from Captain Mike Gallo’s lodge to the Intracoastal Waterway is a short one through Lake Catherine.
We started in the bypass canal with thick grass beds that made for good fishing for redfish.
What Tackle To Use
I used a new Berkley Havoc Grass Pig Jr. It has a real sharp hook on a thin wire.
After catching a few redfish, we headed closer to the Great Flood Wall in search of some speckled trout.
Don’t Get Out On The Water Too Early
“We didn’t leave until 8 a.m. but we certainly could have left at 10 a.m. And if we were strictly trying to trout fish that would have given the water a chance to warm up a little bit with the sunshine and you’d have better luck. We didn’t’ catch a trout until after 10 a.m., I wouldn’t say. But we concentrated on redfish first thing, or we concentrated on whatever we could catch. But the water temperature sort of dictated that redfish was going to be still aggressive,” Captain Mike Gallo said recapping our fishing trip this week.
Look For Deep Water Channels
So water temperature is key, the Berkley Havoc Grass Pig Jr. doesn’t hurt to have on board.
The big deal is you got to find those deep channels in anywhere from Chef Pass, the Intracoastal Waterway, The Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, and the Wall, you have a lot of great opportunities to catch some good fish, including redfish, speckled trout, bass, and even a mullet.
