BIGFISH: Celebrate your freedom by fishing

One of the best ways to celebrate your freedom this weekend is, well frankly, to go fishing.

One of the best ways to celebrate your freedom this weekend is, well frankly, to go fishing.

You can go when you want as early as you want there are no speed limits traffic lights or stop signs and school zones here often mean schools of fish zones.

Shell Beach and the Mr. Go

Fishing guide Eric Olsen, marine owner Robby Campo, a few family friends and I left the Shell Beach launch early this morning.

The goal was to beat the heat and the boats that would likely hit the same area as we were.

This week’s strong tides seemed to have brought in cleaner, saltier water in, as well as, a few speckled trout. on the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (Mr. Go) while seeing the speckled trout closer to our marshes was a good sign.

Commercial fishing industry still reeling from Spillway opening

Robby Campo says our commercial fishing industry is not so lucky.

“I have never witnessed anything like this in my life I’ve been here my whole life this spillway opening has killed at least I’m going to go on the light side here and say a half million dollars’ worth of oysters.”

Captain Eric Olsen says even though fish are being caught the charter fishing business is down quite a bit.

“25-30 percent it has affected everybody’s business this year we are all down from where we should be.”

Both Eric and Robby tell me in the meantime they will make the best of the situation.

Freedom to fish
